These are sometimes called Coontie Palms or Coontie Ferns. However, they're primitive plants that are more closely related to pines.
These are only Cycads native to Florida. They form compact clumps that rarely exceed 3 feet in height and width. While the seeds and pulp are toxic to both humans and almost all animals, the ants seem to thrive on the soft flesh. The cones mature annually November through January.
These slow growing plants are dioecious, meaning separate male and female plants. Male cones are smaller, narrower and darker than female cones.
